A Claude Code Love Letter

I just launched something that brings together my past and present.

In 2013, I built my first website: a terminal based portfolio that hit #2 on Hacker News and got 12k+ views from 100+ countries.

Over the past few months, I've been using Claude Code, Anthropic's new CLI agentic coding tool, nonstop. The speed and joy of building with it reminds me of when I first learned to code.

So I rebuilt the terminal concept as a homage to both my original website and my new favorite tool.

You start in bash mode with a virtual filesystem. Type "claude" and it becomes an AI powered chat that knows my full background. Ask about my work at SeatGeek, side projects, or my interests.

In Jenny Wen's fantastic recent "Why Designers Can No Longer Trust the Design Process," she shared a handful of "ways good work is made." This project embraced them all, but especially "Doing something just for the sake of making people smile."

I spent way too long on details most people won't notice. I custom-patched a monospaced font so the ASCII art would render without gaps. I built a lip-sync system so the Claude Code mascot moves in time with robot voice sounds.

There are a lot of other fun details. Curious how many you'll notice.

Beyond this terminal site, Claude Code has transformed how I work. Tasks that would've taken weeks or months now finish in days. It's allowed me to make progress on a ton of side projects:

  • NYC Jazz Guide: Events from 25 NYC jazz clubs. Includes follows, activity feed, and an admin for artist profiles and editorial lists. Built in ~2 months (this would've been a 1+ year project without Claude Code).
  • My wife's psychologist website: The first ~95% (including copy) was built in ~30m from two short prompts.
  • This personal website: Rebuilt homepage, migrated my blog, added project case studies.

It's an incredible time to have ideas you want to bring to life.
